Kung Fu: Northern & Southern

The conditioning (basics) classes held at Shao Lin Boxing Methods focus on both the Southern Hung Gar and Northern Shao Lin schools of Kung Fu.  In rigorous training sessions, students learn proper body alignment, develop external conditioning and, like the monks of centuries ago, train with the many practice sets (forms) they have passed down to us through the generations.

At the center of all kung fu training at SLB is a gradual conditioning component designed to safely and effectively transform thw practitioner's body into the physically strong, athletically superior physique of a kung fu scholar/warrior.  While Northern training focuses on grace and fluidity and Southern training is known more for root and power, both systems build endurance, strength and stamina for a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

 Northern Shao Lin

The Northern curriculum begins with Lin Bu Chuan and Tan Tui and includes all ten empty hand sets from Northern Shao Lin.

Northern  training, while emphasizing strong bone and muscle development, varies from other training systems in technique and focus.  High kick drills, speed and fluidity are at the heart of our Northern curriculum.

A typical Northern conditioning class includes:

  • 20 to 30 minutes of stance training and muscle conditioning
  • Emphasis on Northern blocking and striking techniques
  • Introduction to forms and application (repetitive use of Northern System forms for cardiovascular development and )building muscle memory
  • Northern 2-person drills focusing on speed, agility, distance and timing
  • Leg development and the extensive kicking applications of the Northern system
  • Stretching, cool downs and instruction review

Southern Hung Gar

SiFu Kleppe perpetuates the Canton and Ha Say Fu Hung Gar Systems by instructing students in traditional forms and training techniques.  Included in the curriculum are the Plum Flower Fist Set, Lau Family Fist Set, Lau Family Palm Set, Heart Penetrating Palm and many, many, others.

Southern Hung Gar training emphasizes low stances and strengthening techniques for bone and muscle development.  Students in the Southern basics classes concentrate on close-quarter fighting strategies, iron-hard blocks, low snap kicks, ambidexterity, deceptive hand techniques and power.  Hung Gar training is described as "intense" and highly demanding -- but classes at SLB are suited for beginner and experienced practitioners alike.

A typical Southern conditioning class includes:

  • 20 to 30 minutes of stance training and muscle conditioning.
  • Emphasis on Southern blocking and striking techniques
  • Introduciton to forms and application (repetitive use of Hung System forms for cardiovascular development and building muscle memory)
  • Southern 2-person drills focusing on distancing and timing
  • Leg development and the low kicks of the Southern system
  • Stretching, cool downs and instruction review
