Welcome to Yoga at SLB --

Like all other programs offered at our school, the Yoga component is a complement to living a longer, healthier and happier life.  Hatha Yoga (Yoga for Health) classes, led by long time yoga practitioner and instructor Shari Kleppe, offer students an opportunity not only to stretch  and strengthen their bodies, but more importantly they provide an environment in which to re-establish a positive relationship with the physical self.

The first thing a student learns in an SLB Yoga practice is to suspend judgment.  As traditional yoga practice is a moving meditation, it truly serves no purpose to consistently second guess one's movements or to keep the mind in competitive mode comparing yourself to others (or even to who you were yesterday or will be tomorrow).  No, hatha yoga asks us simply to be present with ourselves and our bodies.  All we need do is show up and be present on the mat and the practice itself  provides us with  techniques to calm the mind and movements that, when in sync with the breath, bring about overall health and balance.

The problem with many yoga practices today is that (particularly in America) there has been a tendency to sensationalize the most extreme of practices.  On TV we see skinny ballet dancers contorting themselves into postures that any person who hasn't trained since the age of 5 would be hard pressed to copy.  Magazines (in an effort to sell more magazines) display the most precise, most challenging poses on their covers, hoping to show the strength and capabilities of long time yoga practitioners.  In doing so, however, mainstream media (and some yoga gyms) have given the impression that the practice is only for those already inclined to be fit, slim, trim and flexible.

True yoga, is nothing of the sort.  In a practical classroom situation, one individual may bend to touch her toes, and another may only reach forward a quarter of  an inch.  As long as they are both structurally aligned, have the proper breathing and can "feel" themselves progressing, then both have achieved the union that is yoga.

"For those wounded by civilization, yoga is the most healing salve. "                     ~ T. Guillemets

"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly."

                  ~Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta

"Inhale, and God approaches you. Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you. Exhale, and you approach God. Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God."

 ~ Krishnamacharya

"When you inhale, you are taking the strength from God.  When you exhale, it represents the service you are giving to the world. "
                                            ~B.K.S. Iyengar
